NCRES Monthly Series: REVIVE | Award Winning Zero Energy Design and Construction

Located on Willox Lane just west of North College Avenue, Revive is a multi-award winning net zero community generating its energy needs from geothermal wells and roof mounted solar electric panels. Among others, awards include the 2016 and 2018 Grand Prize Award winner for Housing Innovation from the US Department of Energy.

The design and construction team will present how they were able to achieve high performance within a multi-unit market rate tract building environment. As well, they will provide information comparing and contrasting the approaches used to typical code built high production homes. The REVIVE team includes architect, Greg Fisher; energy modeler, Paul Norton; Developer Sue McFaddin; and builder, Dave Phillips.

The presentation will be held at Odell Brewing Company’s taproom at 800 E. Lincoln Avenue in Fort Collins. Doors open at 7 pm with presentation commencing at 7:30 and running through 8:30 pm.

Greg is the founder of Greg D. Fisher, Architect, an award winning firm established in 1993. His practice focuses on simple, progressive, authentic and responsible designs.Greg’s commitment to sustainability has led him to serve as a founding Steering Committee member of the Northern Colorado Branch of the USGBC, board member of the Institute for the Built Environment, founding board member of CLEAR (Center for Living Environments and Regeneration), founding developer of the LENSES (Living Environments in Natural Social and Economic Systems) framework and founding board member of the NoCo Rebuilding Network. As well as to numerous LEED, Net Zero, LENSES, Passive House and highly sustainable to regenerative minded projects.

Susan McFaddin has been in real estate development and brokerage in Northern Colorado for over a decade specializing in zero and low energy efficient and sustainable commercial and residential properties. She was a Commissioner for the Fort Collins Housing Authority and served on the CSU Institute for the Built Environments board for many years. The IBE named her the Change builder of the Year in 2016. She leads high performance teams to create extraordinary results like the Seven Generations Office Park which was the first LEED-Platinum Office Park in Northern Colorado and the Revive residential development which was the first DOEZero Energy development in Colorado and multiple award winner.

Paul Norton of Paul Norton R&D has been engaged in building energy efficiency research for over 25 years – as a researcher at NREL and more recently as an independent consultant. His focus is field research of high performance buildings with a special interest in Zero Energy Homes.Paul has authored and coauthored technical reports on topics including zero energy design, high performance case studies, building energy testingpractices and community scale performance evaluation. Since 2011 Paul has led the Instrumentation Team that measures and scores the performance of homes in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon.He provided the energy modeling that helped guide the design of the energy features incorporated into the Revive homes. Paul has a M.S. Mechanical Engineering from University of Colorado – Boulder and a B.S. Mechanical Engineering from Syracuse University.

Dave Phillips, partner in Philgreen Construction is the builder at Revive, the award winning net zero energy community in Fort Collins. Dave has been a licensed builder in Fort Collins and northern Colorado and Wyoming since 1981. Some notable projects include passive solar homes, ground source heating and cooling homes, a concrete dome o% grid home, other innovative energy advanced buildings, and being team leader on Colorado’s 1st LEED Gold home.
